Chapter Thirteen

“A man that angry could have returned to kill more than a front door cam,” Erica muttered to herself as she climbed out of the patrol car.

She was still thinking of Nigel Darby as she strode through the halls of the police station. She nodded a greeting as she passed through the main office but her steps never slowed. When she saw Jerry pacing in the room they used for murder investigations, she picked up speed.

“What is it?” Erica asked as she burst into the room. “Do you have something?”

She could see the excitement in his eyes. See the look of victory on his face. His whole body appeared to be humming with excitement. Her eyes swept first the murder board then shifted to his computer monitor.

“Wait until you see this.” Jerry held up one finger. “Though some of it is technically just audio.”

“You’re killing me here.” She positioned herself behind his chair with a good view of his monitor.

Jerry wasn’t ready to take a seat. He continued to pace as he explained his process. “You know that I’ve been collecting as many artifacts from the various devices around our victim as possible.”

She played along, allowing him the moment to build up to his findings. “There are the security cameras in the neighborhood as well as any dashcams, including the one from Rhys and Ian’s patrol car during the garage band incident.”

“Right.” Jerry’s pace increased. “But there are also a lot of different sources from inside the house.”

She pictured a walkthrough of Emilee’s house in her mind. “The front door camera was missing thanks to our friend Nigel Darby.” She wagged a finger. “But Emilee had one of those things you talk to.”

“Correct. It can be used to control different things in the house like lighting or temperature, but it can also be used to order things from the Internet.” He described a few competing brands. “Of course, many smart devices are multifunctional and can interact with other smart devices and often that data is stored in the cloud.”

She frowned to indicate he was losing her in the muddy waters of technology.

Jerry stopped pacing and held up both hands to cut to the chase. “Renata Engels is the killer. We have her dead to rights.”

She lifted her brows.

He pointed at his computer. “She’s on both video and audio in the act of murder. There’s no way a jury would let her walk with this kind of proof.”

“Seriously?”

“An increasing number of crimes are relying on the data from the smart devices people surround themselves with. Technically called Internet of things, these devices listen in or record what you say and do as you go about your day but they also respond.”

Her brows pulled together as Jerry dug deeper into the muddy depths. “I knew that.”

Jerry huffed out a laugh at the look on her face. “Let me show you. I took all of the audio and video and sequenced them in chronological order as they happened. There are some odd gaps, but I don’t think they’ll matter in terms of proof.
